Batumi & Ajara: Infrastructure, Environment and Tourism Opportunities for Czech Companies

Ajara is not just a tourism story. Current investment themes span wastewater, water supply, roads, airport capacity, urban mobility, solid waste, hospitality and climate-resilient municipal infrastructure.

Why Ajara deserves its own commercial radar

Batumi and the wider Ajara region combine rapid urban development, a large seasonal visitor economy, Black Sea logistics, a land border with Türkiye and continuing investment in municipal systems. For Czech suppliers this creates a cluster where environmental technology, engineering, building systems, transport technology and hospitality products can overlap.

The region’s 2026 public investment agenda includes road works, water-supply projects, airport expansion, urban infrastructure and continuing tourism development. The commercial opportunity is therefore broader than selling to hotels: it includes utilities, contractors, municipalities, developers, transport operators and donor-financed programmes.

Water and wastewater are already a Czech reference area

Czech companies have tangible references in Batumi. Zikmund Electronics supplied modular camera-inspection technology for sewage networks, while DEKONTA carried out work connected with assessment and rehabilitation planning for the former Batumi refinery site. These cases demonstrate that Czech environmental capability has already been applied to local infrastructure and environmental problems.

Current municipal works include additional water-storage capacity and continuing rehabilitation of communal infrastructure. A major wastewater-treatment expansion and sewer-system works have also been moving through the project cycle. Suppliers should distinguish completed tenders from future packages and focus on the equipment or expertise that is actually still to be procured.

Ajara’s rural water programme creates a wider regional market

The regional water and wastewater modernisation programme extends beyond Batumi into Keda, Shuakhevi, Khulo, Khelvachauri and Kobuleti. The investment theme includes modern water supply, wastewater infrastructure and service improvements intended to raise living standards and support tourism. This can create demand for treatment, pumps, monitoring, telemetry, valves, metering, laboratory equipment and engineering services depending on package design.

Roads and mobility are changing the commercial geography

The Batumi Bypass and Batumi–Sarpi corridor projects are strategically important because they address congestion around the Black Sea coast and the Turkish border. Ajara also has active road rehabilitation and planned tunnel works. Czech firms with tunnel systems, safety equipment, intelligent transport systems, monitoring, electrical systems or specialist engineering should track package-level procurement rather than assume that the headline civil-works contract is the only entry point.

Airport capacity and hospitality keep expanding the private market

Batumi International Airport recorded more than 1.23 million passengers in 2025 and is undergoing works intended to expand terminal capacity by roughly a quarter. More passenger capacity strengthens the case for hotels, food service, retail, transport, building systems and tourism infrastructure, although each private opportunity requires project-level validation.

Large private developments, including new mixed-use and hospitality projects, can create demand for Czech furniture, lighting, sanitary systems, glass, kitchens, beverage technology, security, access control and energy-efficient building technology. TON and Alcadrain already illustrate two Czech product categories with a local Georgian route.

How to qualify an Ajara opportunity

Start with the project owner and status. Determine whether the need is already contracted, still in design, funded but not procured, or only announced. Then identify the decision-maker, technical consultant, contractor route, qualification thresholds and whether the product can be supplied directly or must be integrated by a local or international contractor.

Regional opportunity pages are useful only when they prevent wasted sales effort. A Czech supplier should leave the research phase with a short list of named projects and counterparties, not a generic statement that “Batumi is growing.”
